And there’s a methodology to that madness: many crucial albums unleashed in the latter half of the year. Those LPs, solid as they may be, would suffer under a “total spins” criteria, because there was less of a year to spin them in. This specific chart helps level the playing field for crucial platters released October – December (or even just in the back half of the year).
Purists among you, and there will be some, will be heartened to note that there will also be a “total spins from album” chart, unlocking shortly. This chart penalizes later releases, but generates a rather different picture overall. And that’s not a bad thing, just a different thing.
