NIIGHTS – Sylvia Premiere

NIIGHTS have been busy. It’s been rather a while since their debut album, Whisper, featuring the standout single “Walkaway” (heavy and permanent rotation around these parts). But with the release of several teaser singles in advance of the new album Hellebores, it’s been a particularly creative time for Jenna and crew. From the visual/conceptual design to the sonic expansion of footprint, this flurry of activity shows a lot of dedicated effort to make a lasting impression.

Early singles “Generator”, “Keyhole” and “So Into You” display a band that knows their sound, and updates and refreshes their compelling approach right out of the gate. But NIIGHTS is no one-trick pony. The forthcoming single “Sylvia” draws from multiple genres, in one challenging but compelling whole. Strong metallic power chords bring the fanfare, while Jenna Fournier’s angelic vocals float atop the sturm and drang. Sure, there are shoegaze textures and wash involved here, but they churn underneath, in service to the metallic assault. From there, we’re taken on a journey through math rock and post rock, as these talented musicians explore the outer parameters of their sound.

The animated lyric video for “Sylvia” is credited to vocalist Jenna Fournier herself. An accomplished visual artist in her own right, Jenna lets animated skeletal unicorns lead you through the lyrics and shifts of the song. The video stars the band’s visual mascot Luna, as she escapes hunters and isolation on her journey toward her tribe and a communal place of belonging and light.

“Sylvia” is released as a single on Friday 25 January, in advance of full album release on 15 February. Preorders are live, and already generating buzz on multiple platforms. There are even “special preorder packages” available via Bandcamp, featuring shirts, posters, buttons and original artwork. It’s nice to see a talented group of artists each bringing their strengths to this project, and taking it in new and creative directions. We have it on good authority that NIIGHTS is currently finalizing plans for an international tour to support this release, including stops in Japan. No small endeavor, that, but this cast is more than prepared to take this show on the road.
