DKFM The buzzing in your ears is completely natural.
In these studios, we’ve been looking forward to the new single from Atlanta’s Kid Fears. Opening with a fog of guitar, long open chord. Then heavy churning guitar chords set against sparkling lead guitar notes, plaintive vocals, and even judicious use of near-yodel (throwback to Sinead O’Connor in her heyday). And it’s masterful. Fully realized, presented as a planted flag: Kid Fears has arrived, and they’ve carved out a sonic signature all their own. The second single from the forthcoming Undying Love album due 28 July, “Say” unlocks today for fans of shoegaze, dream pop, slowcore, epic sweep, gently rendered choruses, and intimate confessionals. This seems the total package, surpassing even their first single, “Lemon”.
Rose Ewing wrote the songs on the album, but they come to full fruit when backed by a capable cast of bandmates who know how to bring the point home. Rose describes the genesis of the single “Say” as “…an exploration of longing, the movement of time, memory, and fading minds. The anticipation of death, a looming presence made tactile through natural and manipulated sound. Melancholy, and yet playful, dipping low into darkness while finding peace in the beauty of existence, and in the expression of love, wrapped in rich layers of sonic wonder.” Frankly that beats about anything we could say about the effort. Suffice to say this is a gem in a sea willing to settle for “good enough”, a perfectly crystallized intimate anthem you’ll want to revisit again and again. We can’t wait to hear what the rest of the Undying Love LP has to offer.
Follow Kid Fears on Bandcamp, Spotify …and that’s all we can find. No matter. Get lost in the music. That’s all that’s required of the effort. And expect to hear this consistently on our airwaves, as we evangelize this sound, this artistic effort. Worthy of your attention.
