Rev Rev Rev Wows At SXSW, Releases New Album Kykeon in September

By Deborah Sexton

Much to the delight of fans, Rev Rev Rev from Modena, Italy, has been quite active lately, playing five shows in March during SXSW in Austin, Texas, and releasing a new single “Clutching The Blade” on March 7 through its new label, London-based Fuzz Club Records.

The band made quite an impression during SXSW, being referenced in a variety of articles in national media. Perhaps the most notable was NPR’s “2019 SXSW Wrap-Up: Our Favorite Discoveries And Memorable Moments.” They were also namechecked by Eli Enis, editor of The Alternative, an entertainment website for music reviews and news, when he described the band as “utterly dazzling” in their sonic presentation.

“SXSW was a blast,” says Laura Iacuzio, lead singer/guitarist. “It was a wonderful experience, and the atmosphere in the city was fantastic.”

Some of Rev Rev Rev’s SXSW performances were captured and immortalized on YouTube: “Clutching The Blade” live performance at the Velveeta Room, Austin, Texas during SXSW 2019, “Best of SXSW Live”, HQ posted by Rick Dalberg. “Plymouth Morning,” performed at The Spider House Cafe and Ballroom, Austin, Texas, March 13, 2019. Surely there’s more we haven’t stumbled across yet.

New Album Kykeon On The Horizon

Releasing the new single less than a week before their SXSW appearances helped create some of the buzz the band enjoyed, with more than 15 radio stations and syndicated shows, including DKFM, NPR, and The Reverb, picking it up for airplay. According to Iacuzio, the band sent the track to some of the stations for consideration, but others simply found it on their own.

The best news is that “Clutching The Blade” is the first of 10 songs to be included on the new album, entitled Kykeon, scheduled for release in September 2019. It will be the band’s third full-length album, and the followup to Des Fleurs Magiques Bourdonnaient, which came out in February 2016.

The album title is actually an ancient Greek term for a beverage that was consumed during certain secret rites and festivals called ‘Eleusinian Mysteries’. “Everybody says that music can have the same effect as drugs to expand one’s consciousness,” says Sebastian Lugli, lead guitar. “In this case there’s also a parallel between the mood of the album and the phases of those rites: the descent (loss), the search, and the ascent.”

To support the new album, the band is currently planning a tour of Europe including Italy, France, Switzerland and Great Britain, launching in October.

In May, they have two shows scheduled in Italy. On Sunday, May 19, they will be playing the Freakscene Festival 2019 in Soliera, Italy, which will be held in a club fairly close to home. Then on Friday, May 24, they are playing at In A State Of Flux Festival Vol. 4, to be held at Circolo Ohibò, a club in Milan.

Having released their last album on Northern Light Records, Lugli says they reached out to Fuzz Club because some of their favorite bands are on the label. Examples include A Place To Bury Strangers, The Gluts, Singapore Sling, and The Underground Youth. While it’s still up in the air what formats the new album will be released on, Lugli confirms that vinyl is a definite, and probably CDs as well.

While Rev Rev Rev does not have a lot of local venues to play, Lugli says, “In Italy we have a very good shoegaze scene. It’s made up of diverse bands such as Stella Diana, Be Forest, In Her Eye, Clustersun, and Red Mishima, to name a few.”

Other favorites, not in Italy, include some of the classic bands of the genre such as My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, and Swervedriver, as well as Medicine, Loop, The Black Angels and The Brian Jonestown Massacre.

In addition to Iacuzio, and Lugli, the band includes Andrea Dall’Omo, on bass and Greta Benatti on drums.
