Top 50 of 2012

A list we released at the break of the new year. Tradition? Maybe. Take a look…

As voted by our listeners. Some released in 2011, a couple in 2010, but these were the highest vote-getters, so we have to go with the flow.
1. Be Forest – I Quit Girls (Japandroids cover)
This is what the end of the world sounds like.

2. Drowner – Breathe
The light, the hope at the end of the tunnel.

3. Tamaryn – I’m Gone
Rex John Shelverton turns in the guitar lick of the year.

4. Slowness – Black & White
A 2011 release that got plenty of attention in the run-up to their impending 2013 LP.

5. Airiel – Flashlight Tag
Sounding like nothing Airiel had ever done before, with a vocal line straight from Al Stewart. Simultaneously immediate and nostalgic. A breath of fresh air in 2012.

6. New Canyons – Pitch Black
The distance between New Canyons first LP release and the two fresh New Canyons singles… only makes us excited for what the full LP release brings. Moody synthgaze with perfect guitar balance.

7. Melody’s Echo Chamber – Some Time Alone, Alone
Couldn’t hold this release down. The whole album lived up to the pre-release hype.

8. A Place to Bury Strangers – You Are the One
Probably was one of the most anticipated releases of the year.

9. Lightfoils – Take Care Tonight
Didn’t see this one coming? Not at all. The staff and listeners both got behind Lightfoils early, and though personnel changes have happened since, we can pretty much guarantee more excellence to come!

10. My Dead Girlfriend – Watashi no Aishita Manatsu no Shinigami
A total cheat on our part. We’d promised ourselves that NO two-year old track would be allowed to crack the top ten. Then we counted up the votes for this one. Much of our audience had NEVER heard this before. Voters using the Live365 app gave this a RESOUNDING score that we simply couldn’t ignore. Falling between shoegaze and dream pop, this tune perfectly captures BOTH.
