There aren’t enough column inches to describe what we’ve put together for this weekend’s DreamGaze Worldwide presentation. Superlatives like “new”, “rare”, “never-before-seen” fail to do justice to just what’s been put together for our live virtual festival this weekend. We’ll just enumerate a few highlights for you.
New Age Healers (pictured above): The Seattle post-psychedelic shoegaze quartet unleash a world premiere with a little help from Katie Haley (Soft Science), Jim Biggs (Black Nite Crash), My Young (Jupe Jupe) and more. Owen Murphy’s New Age Healers simultaneously announced that all proceeds from the single and video will benefit Creative Justice, a group that uses an “innovative arts-based approach to ending racial disproportionality and youth incarceration.” The song “In Dreams” was written by Murphy in quarantine, with remote contributions from band members and special guests. “New Age Healers was a project originally started in late 2015 as a way to build community through art,” says Murphy. “This song is a natural extension of that notion. Regardless of the pandemic, fostering friendships via music was, and is, important. Written amidst the COVID-19 crisis, the song represents our hopes and fears many of us feel in this unprecedented time.” The song “In Dreams” will be released shortly after this premiere.
Presents for Sally: relatively quiet since 2016’s split EP with 93MillionMilesFromTheSun, many have wondered what happened to Matt Etherton’s chart-topping Presents for Sally project since. The answer is “Any Which Way But There”, originally titled “The Long One”, as it clocks in at just over the twenty-minute mark. An expansive, ever-evolving work, it’s accompanied by a visually arresting document that has to be seen to be fully absorbed. What was originally a medley the band members put together, it was never intended to be a single work. But as the songs came into focus, and the pieces began to fit together, it became a work greater than the sum of its parts. The track premieres here, and will come out as part of a 12″ single release later this year, alongside three other songs, at least one of which is taken from their forthcoming third album. (with thanks to Dom Gourlay for biographical data)
Daniel Land: for over a decade, as a solo artist, as bandleader of Daniel Land & The Modern Painters, under the imprint of riverrun, or as a member of bands like Engineers, Daniel Land has been creating richly evocative music for legions of fans. Firmly in the dream pop genre, he’s won fans around the globe with his subtle songcraft and painterly guitar textures. What you’ll see here are two never-before-seen music videos from Land’s last album, part of a larger visual promo project that didn’t come to fruition. We’re extremely lucky to be able to premiere these for you here.
There’s simply too much to run down for you here, but this multi-hour presentation features rare quarantine performances from an international cast, including song premieres from Twin Oaks and 93MillionMilesFromTheSun, and rare archival footage from Spotlight Kid and Resplandor.
