Echodrone Video Premiere: “Midnight Frost”
Written by Greg Wilson on February 26, 2021
Long-time listeners are surely familiar with Echodrone. A decade-long career of creative output, carving out a space between post-rock and shoegaze, with dreamy flourishes and hooks that leave a mark. On the eve of release for their new long-player Resurgence, Echodrone tapped Kev Cleary for an assist. As the founder and O.G. of Facebook’s largest shoegaze group, his longtime fandom helped open access to a cast of willing participants for their upcoming video. Kevin put out the call, and the fans responded. Sure, we’ve seen crowdsourced videos before. It’s a creative and credible way to connect bands and fans, with each celebrating the other for their support. But it’s more than a little charming when a venerable band that’s been working hard since 2007’s self-titled debut connect more deeply with their audience. And we’re thrilled to present the video premiere of this multi-platform collaboration for “Midnight Frost”.
We asked the band about how the video came together, trying to get a feel of how a band that’s rarely found in once place made a document of music and life in quarantine times. “Given how everyone in the band is scattered all over the states, we knew it would be impossible to put together a proper ‘in-person’ full-band video, so we decided to do a Covid/quarantine/Zoom style fan video. It seemed appropriate since the new album, Resurgence, is roughly based on Covid/quarantine and our emotional responses to it.
It turned out to be an awesome decision since the submissions we received from everyone were so creative and amazing. So many awesome videos from so many places around the world. We’re truly humbled – thank you all!!
Also wanted to give a huge shout out to Kev Cleary, Nico Beatastic and the SGDPNG group for jumping in headfirst to support this crazy idea, we are forever in your debt!!l Finally, this wouldn’t have been possible without Maile Allen’s video editing/producing wizardry – we couldn’t be more thrilled with how she pieced everything together!!”
If you’ve spent any time on the Facespace shoegaze groups, you’ll surely recognize some of the faces who participated. Not an Easter egg, it’s definitely a pleasant surprise that gives the premise more of a familiar, homey feeling. Comfort food for the soul.
The album Resurgence is unleashed on 5 March, with two early singles from the offering available now with preorder. Follow the Echodrone crew via their website, Twitter, and Facebook. We’re looking forward to getting more from this diverse and sparkling platter on air next week!
