Be Forest – Atto I
The curtain opens on Knockturne
Be Forest do the slow reveal
With a puff 0f smoke and a slow curtain pull, Be Forest announce their forthcoming album, Knockturne. The first purchaseable single, “Bengala”, dropped 13 December, so “Atto I” rather serves as the teaser, the mysterious reveal. Knockturne releases February 8th on We Were Never Being Boring, and it’s their first new album since 2014’s Earthbeat. Has it really been that long?
Where Cold may have been rooted to druidic rhythms, and Earthbeat bound to Polynesian tribal beats, Knockturne seems more akin to soundtrack: if you heard it as the backdrop for Twin Peaks, perhaps, you’d not blink at the way the visual and the auditory mesh. Simultaneously sublime and compelling, the new album finds the cast of Be Forest reaching for new modes of expression, more expressive forms of communication.
The unease you feel is real
The press kit describes Knockturne as “a song cycle that commiserates with our own collective international uncertainty and unease of these current times…”. It’s an uncertainty laced with menace, wrapped in reverb and minor keys. Not so much claustrophobic as searching for the way out (and up). Let’s hope we don’t have to wait another five years for the resolution of this unease.
