New Tracks Weekend, January 11-13

Written by on January 11, 2019

It’s got to be an embarrassment when the year is less than two weeks old, and the album of the year is released. Surely could have allowed others to catch up? No, Tallies dropped their self-titled debut album on Hand Drawn Dracula, and suddenly everyone else is on notice. This capable crew mines a vein of rich dream pop in the sweet spot between The Sundays and Innocence Mission, then updates it for the new millennium. And we’re all better for it. We’re not the only ones who’ve been buzzing about this before release, but (in this case), we’re the ones you’re paying attention to. And we’re not wrong. Tallies have laid down a marker that all other albums in 2019 will be measured against. Best get cracking, bands who aren’t Tallies.

But we’re packed with so much more. New releases from the grunge-inflected Angelic Milk, homage from Daydream Cathedral, bliss we missed from High/Low, sparkly new tunes from South Korea’s CANDY, the new single from WESTKUST, the fresh Part Time Punks Session from Topographies, plus treats from Trillion, Monad, Le SuperHomard, and Outward. Finally, we catch up with some brilliance we’ve missed from Narrow Head. Face it, we can’t always be on top of everything, but this omission is surely glaring. We’re dedicated to making sure they’re given their due starting this weekend.

That’s of course in addition to last weekend’s brilliance, including 93millionmilesfromthesun, Backward Charm, Elsa, Indoor Voices, Supertwin, The Day, Elenin, Imperfect Tree, cmfrtble and so much more. More music than hours in the day, guaranteed.

New Tracks Weekend is begun 8 pm Eastern, 5 pm Pacific, and continues through Sunday at midnight Eastern, 9 Pacific. It’s the first weekend we’ll spin some of these tracks, and may be the last weekend for some others.
